Mavericks of Minimalism

  • Settlement Music School 416 Queen St Philadelphia, PA, 19147 United States (map)

The final concert of Network’s 2018-19 SOUND DESIGNS season culminates in a Network commission, Air = Water, two movements for string quartet & Balinese gamelan, by cross-culturalist, Evan Ziporyn. Gerald Levinson’s exquisitely constructed Bronze Music (2 pianos, 4 hands), composed in Bali, adds another exotic resonance to the program. John Adams’ Road Movies (violin & piano) inserts a subversive ‘swing’ into the mix while Hannah Lash’s C for vibraphone & piano returns us to the simplicity of the minimalist style. The Network Ensemble will also join select instrumentalists from the Philadelphia Sinfonia youth orchestra to perform Terry Riley’s minimalist masterpiece In C.

Immediately following the performance there will be a post-concert panel discussion on multi-culturalism in music with featured composer, Evan Ziporyn; founder and director of Gamelan Semara Santi, Tom Whitman; and Network Ensemble conductor Jan Krzywicki (moderated by the Artistic Director, Thomas Schuttenhelm).

Featuring exceptional performances by these members of the Network for New Music Ensemble:
